QUST Students Visit North Star Recycling for Cognitive Internship

On November 18, 2025, Director Wang Dong and Associate Professor Yang Xiaogang of the Safety Engineering Teaching and Research Section at the School of Environment and Safety Engineering, Qingdao University of Science and Technology, led more than 60 undergraduate students majoring in safety engineering to North Star Recycling Advanced Circular Technology Research Institute for a cognitive internship. Building on last year’s successful program, the two sides once again joined hands this year, aiming to take the students to the front lines of industry, keep them abreast of cutting-edge developments in the new energy sector, and give them firsthand experience of environmental protection and safety practices.

At the beginning of the activity, under the guidance of the interpreter, the students first visited the exhibition hall of North Star Recycling and carefully learned about the company’s development journey from startup to industry leadership.

Then everyone walked into the first floor of the production facility for on-site observation. The textbook theories turned into real production lines and equipment before their eyes, giving the students a deeper understanding of North Star Recycling’s corporate vision of keeping circular technology abreast of the times.

Then in Qingdao Hall on the second floor, Dr. Feng Yi gave the students a rich and accessible thematic lecture. Dr. Feng focused on lithium battery recycling processes, combining his own R&D experience to explain complex technical principles clearly and thoroughly. During the on-site Q&A session, the students asked questions actively, and Dr. Feng answered patiently, with sparks of ideas colliding constantly and the atmosphere very lively.

At the end of the activity, Professor Yang said that last year’s first visit to North Star Recycling left a deep impression on the students. This year, leading the team here again, what he saw was North Star Recycling’s faster development and unchanged original aspiration. Such internships not only let students personally feel the key role of circular economy in achieving the dual-carbon goals, but also gave them the most intuitive understanding of on-site safety and process safety in the recycling of retired lithium batteries, providing valuable guidance for their future professional study and career planning.

This internship is a vivid interpretation of the workshop is the classroom, practice is teaching.
